The golf course and common grounds are in good shape heading into the new year. Trees have been trimmed, and pinestraw has been laid. As I look back at 2023, I can say we have done just about everything possible to set ourselves up for success in 2024 and look forward to whatever challenges may arise in the new year.

Glen Eagle Maintenance (12/14/23)

 We are really starting to see the El Niño weather roll into our area this week. Most of the week has been overcast and the weekend looks like it will be wet. The third leg of the El Niño is cooler weather which will happen once the cold front pushes thru our area. The good news is that we should receive some much needed rain from the system which will help increase the water levels in our lakes.

Golf Course

During periods of challenging weather, we have to reduce stress on the turf, especially the greens. We do that by applying fungicides and keeping our height of cuts just a little higher so that the grass can weather the stress put on it by the environment. So far the greens have been doing well and we will do everything we can to keep it that way.

I played 9 holes this week and for the first time in a long time the course is showing the effects from lack of rain, reduced sunlight, cooler weather and cart traffic. It also looked like we are getting some areas that are affected by mites. To help support the turf, next Thursday we will be applying some foliar fertilizer and ThymeGuard, a natural thyme oil that kills mites. These efforts, some rain and more sunlight should help these weak areas rebound a bit before the beginning of the year.

This week we have been working on trimming the palm trees on the course. It always amazes me the amount of debris that is generated during this annual maintenance.

One last thing to pass along, We are working on having the ice machines lifted and addressing the ice shooting all over the place as it dispenses. The machine on hole #13 was raised 10” to make the dispenser easier to reach and a shoot was added so that ice funnels into cups better when being dispensed. I tried it today after the modifications were made and I think it has made a significant improvement. The vendor is having stainless steel covers made for the bottom of the machines to cover the blocks that were used to lift the machines and finish the setup off with a professional look.

Facilities

As we were preparing for the opening after the carpet installation, Hector went around and touched up areas that needed some fresh paint.

Hector also had to reattach the gate arm and the Davis entrance after it broke off last weekend.

Common Grounds

Work started on replacing areas of the sidewalk along Glen Eagle Blvd last week that are raised and potential tripping hazards. The process is to bust out the old concrete slab, cut the tree roots from under the sidewalk and pore new sections of sidewalk. As you can see in a couple of the pictures, there are some big roots are causing the issues.

Facilities

Hector replaced the door closer at the divot so the door would close properly.
